Tasty Treats!

Chickens and quail love their snacks, a farm favorite here are lentil sprouts. Lentils are one of the cheapest and easiest snacks I have tried for our birds so far!

You can find lentils at almost any grocery store, they tend to be a little under $2.00 a bag, and they last awhile!

We sprout ours in mason jars and will sometimes move them to trays if we want to grow a “bed” of them. Most of the time when the sprouts start growing out of the top of the jar we take them out and give them to our chickens and quail.

Here is our we start our sprouts

🐾 Pour a small amount of lentils into a mason jar, don’t worry they will expand and fill more of the jar once they start growing

🐾 Cover the top, with some kind of mesh, I use self liner cut to size and screw the ring back onto the mason jar you can also use a hair tie or rubber band to secure the mesh

🐾 Fill with water until the lentils are covered, swish around and drain

🐾 Fill your mason jars up about halfway

🐾 Let sit for at least two ours, can be left overnight

🐾 Drain the water

🐾 Add water, swish the lentils around and drain

🐾 Repeat everyday, this is day 2, the lentils are starting to sprout

🐾 Once you start seeing the green sprouts you don’t have to rinse and drain as often or at all, they will continue to grow

🐾 Once the sprouts are growing through the mesh on the jars this is when we feed them to our chickens

🐾 If you want a thicker mat of sprouts you can transfer them to a tray and mist daily

🐾 I break up the clump of lentils into a bowl, add a handful of mealworms and let them enjoy!
